Sweat and sex. October 29, 2007

Someone claimed that he finds female who smell good attractive, I heard. Hmm not surprisingly, most people do like things with fragrant smell, like flowers and fruits, and we try to simulate similar kind of fragrance on our body with flavored shampoo, body lotion, perfume etc. Personally, I find fruity-flavored hygiene products too strong. My best choice would be lightly fragrant cucumber, green tea, tulips and so on. [Discussion: What is your favorite shampoo fragrance?] So if you find people who smell good attractive, no biggie.

But a sweaty body odor? Eeeeewww. I actually read somewhere long time ago about the smell of male sweat turns females on. I haven’t experimented it myself because the thought of it just tends to gross me out. So to this day, I still cannot make sense of that statement. I mean, if I can’t even stand my own sweaty odor, why would I be able to stand another person’s sweaty odor and even like it?

Apparently, one article states, “male sweat contains a compound [pheromones] capable of lightening a woman’s mood and heightening her sexual arousal.” In the article, there is a short description of a study carried out at University of Northumbria (Newcastle, UK). It says that 2 groups of female students were asked to rate the attractive of guys shown in photos. Results show that females in the second group, where a cloth soaked in male sweat is present, rated the males in the photos to be more attractive.

Sounds weird? The following article suggests why this is true:

…The olfactory bulb at the top (inside) of the nose feeds directly into the old brain limbic system, which is the most primitive part of the brain. This is where the emotions, sexual responses and body language are initiated. That is why odors can evoke powerful basic instinctual emotions.

Pheromones are chemical molecules produced by insects, animals and humans…For the most part, these chemicals are used to stimulate sexual interest in the opposite sex.

…women were attracted to clothing that was worn by males with a very different immune system than their own. Presumably, this difference in immune systems allows the male and female to combine their defenses and give their offspring the best chances for survival. This research was repeated in the U.S. and Brazil with similar results.

…the human sweat smell is a natural, animal-like, musky aroma which can be emotionally stimulating and sexually attractive. To many men and women the smell of clean skin and a little fresh sweat is the most powerful turn-on.

There is historical evidence for the use of sweat to attract a mate. Once when Napoleon Bonaparte was returning home from a long period of warring he sent a message ahead to Josephine: “Home in three days. Don’t wash.” Old English folk tales passed down over many generations told young men how to seduce a young woman with his own sweat. The ’secret’ was to place a clean linen handkerchief under his clean arm pit while he danced and twirled the young lady making her dizzy. After the dance, as she recovered, he was to fan her and dab her perspiring forehead with his pheromone saturated handkerchief. The results reportedly were guaranteed to be rewarding.

Squirrels must die!? October 22, 2007

Nooooooooo!

I cannot believe that someone or some people would actually make a website propagandizing to eliminate all squirrels. Maybe it’s intended to be funny. But with novelty t-shirts, mugs, and caps? That’s getting a little too serious imo. They aren’t even cool looking!

They also have a list of “Top 10 reasons why all squirrels must die”…hilarious. Like

2) Squirrels cause millions of dollars of damage to power transformers and lines every year.
They are one of the top causes of power outages and damage to very expensive equipment. They seem to be attracted to transformers and fly into them like Kamikaze pilots.

5) Squirrels have no respect for privacy or property rights.
They move into attics and will not leave. They are not invited. An attic is not an oak tree, and they know this. They are too lazy to build their own homes so they try to take over someone else’s. They move around in the attic at night scaring young kids and women.

The website also linked to a Fox news article, Sinister Squirrel Embarks on Seven-Day Reign of Terror, about a squirrel that caused a ruckus in a park in Florida last August.

The squirrel was eventually captured, destroyed and before it could do more damage. This confirmed what we have known for years: Squirrels are dangerous animals.

If this is the reason why we should get rid of any species on Earth, then I believe the first species to go would be us humans. :]

Maybe I should start a campaign on saving the squirrels.

crazy weather 2007 October 8, 2007

I’m sure everyone complains about the weather once in a while. Too hot. Too cold. Too dry. Too wet.

I spent most of my time in Pittsburgh and Atlanta for the past 4 years. If you have no idea where Pittsburgh and Atlanta is geographically, lets just say Pittsburgh is predominantly cold and Atlanta, hot.

Crazy fact #1.
From the very beginning of my college days, I learned from seniors and friends that Pittsburgh’s biggest turn-off is its shitty weather. It probably is. Usually like a warm week followed by a cold weekend, and vice versa. Nevertheless, I find the change of seasons to be quite distinct and somewhat punctual. Snow flurries in Spring? That’s the first in 4 years.

Crazy fact #2.
Summer in Atlanta has never been hotter. High 80s to 90s. Imagine living in an apartment for weeks withOUT a/c! Then, blizzard in August? Ooh.

Lets see what people around the globe have to say:

A week ago I was the moron who turned on her central air without taking the cover off.
This morning I turned the heat on. In case the condo temp dropped down below 60. The thermostat was at 63 when I woke up. Why? Because it is 41 degrees and raining outside.
Mother Earth, please make up your mind! And please don’t flood any part of my state. We had enough fun with that last May. – Thoughtful1 on WordPress

I live in So California, we had snow flurrys until 11 yesterday, and freeze warnings today, I think last weekend it was in the high 80’s, don’t like the weather here? wait a few days – Oldtimer2 on Fragile Earth

It was 83 *F here in Tampa, FL USA (Jan 7th, 07). It’s usually in the 50’s sometimes dipping into the 20s in the mornings and night….Why is it so damned hot around the world?! – Arcane Demesne on Fragile Earth

Im in england, and every bone in my body recognises that it shouldn’t be this hot.
Its 15 degrees C, the squirrels are mating, baby squirrels are STILL being born….(i feed them regularly in my garden so its VERY easy to spot new ones). The trees and flowers are budding like its early spring, Birds are nesting. Some birds that follow the warmer weathers are apparently plotting up here because its WARM enough.
BEES and WASPS are flying around, and i ain’t NEVER seen that before, not like this. – Anomic of Nihilism on Fragile Earth

Saw something strange today, Canadian Geese flying north. This usually happens in spring, not the middle of January. Anyways, despite that, we’ve been exprenceing one of the most normal winters in quite a while here in alberta. Snow, cold snaps, and typical near normal tempuratures. Only thing strange is a near constant chinook going on over the past few weeks, due to the lows hitting the BC and NW US coast. – DSO on Fragile Earth

Yesterday we had snow and today we had a thunderstorm. I thought we had crazy weather in Georgia. Here in Calgary, there are weeks when I can’t figure out what season it is (like this week). I didn’t even realize we were in for more rain, much less a thunderstorm. We were sitting here watching a rerun of CSI when we heard a clap of thunder. The cats took off, as per usual and after peering out of the living room window, we realized there was a storm over us. It looked like it had been raining for quite awhile.
It’s supposed to drop down to about 2ºC (36ºF) but it’s going to warm up to 16ºC (61ºF). Thankfully the rain and snow will be out of the picture for a few days starting tomorrow. – Teresa on ScribbleScratch

We have noticed since the end of last year that winter was delayed. And when winter started, it stayed longer than usual bringing unexpected rain and very strong winds. Summer started very suddenly after that by June which was very late also. And now we hear complaints from people in Salalah about the delay in the khareef (fall) season.
Since the heat is going up, more water evaporates from the seas and other water sources causing lack of water supplies in some parts of the world and heavy rains, floods and storms in other parts. The balance is off and we had experienced this with Gonu. The chances of that happening again is not far. –

What are some of your crazy weather stories?

gg, birdies and squirries. u pwned our power grids. October 3, 2007

If you’ve used eZanga just recently, you would have heard that the eZanga headquarters was ambushed by “an unsuspecting bird” last Tuesday. Read if you haven’t. Fortunately, the fire remained under control and their X-Box 360 was saved!! /applause

If you haven’t seen the article about frying squirrels, go read it too. And imagine how many homes could have burned up in those 16,000+ power outages.

I do pity the animals that are dying in these incidents. I was very disturbed by the squirrel pic I posted previously. Very powerful image, but very sad at the same time. I have a cat who sleeps about 80% everyday, and that image just kept reminding me of her. :(

I don’t know how we can help to reduce the rate of those incidents. I wish I could just talk to the squirrels and birds, but I can’t. But I do know that we can at least try to protect our homes from such dangerous situations….

Power Up Our Surge Protectors. ;)
